Jounal of my final project

Although it seems impossible to finish 3000 words in a project, even though it can be every fun and meaningful, I decide to try my best to work on it in the next few weeks. In these days, I was stick to my lap top not because I needed to play games or chat but I needed to prepare my project. It is very interesting for me to study racism in American society because I am really involved in it. As an Asian minority, I am confused about the relationships between Black and White. In this weekend, I watched Crash for twice because it was a little hard to understand what it really tells about the conflicts among different races. Actually, I just wanted to find out the points of races in the movie, but I found out more about the movie itself. Crash can get the Oscar reward was not because of its box office but its quality and content. There are many Hollywood commercial movies today, but they rarely convey much useful information to us; generally speaking, they are superficial and materialistic. In Crash, we cannot find any stunts or dramatic love stories, what is inside is something simple but deep, it arouses us to self-question about the problems in the movie.

Abstract
Race problem in America – especially between black and other races
In this project, I am going to discuss an ever-lasting problem-race. First, I will analysis Crash in order to get to the complexity and contradiction between different races. In the meantime, I will use some lasting, critical articles about races to foreshadow for my next discussion.
The reason I choose this topic is that it is a controversy in not only U.S but the whole world. United States is the largest immigrants import country in the world; it has its own severe problems because of the traditional view and modern influences. Trace back to American history, African American, originated from Africa and served as slavery in U.S for a longtime, was discriminated and segregated always. Even after the Declaration of Emancipation, white’s view of them did not change at all. After several large protest and legislative progress, although their status increased, white man’s view of them is still deep-rooted. Nowadays, the racism seem have changed to another phrase. Although white man always advocates equality of all races, in real, they still think they are superior to others; on the other hand, black people look down to Asians as well as being discriminated by white. As to express their resentment, black people invents a special gene of music—Rap. It is not surprising that you can find the lyrics are full of negative information such as sex, drug, violence, and racism. For me, it is the best way to approach their views of the American society.

Is there prejudice in your own country? What can this film teach us about race in your own country? Are there universal issues present in this film?

Of course there is prejudice in my own country. For example, China is uncertainly divided into areas: North and South. Northerners are commonly taller and stronger than Southerners. However, Southerners are smarter and richer than Northerners. So, there are some conflicts between them because some of them don’t respect each other. In this movie, almost no people admit that they are racist; that is the same in China. In our daily life, we don’t admit we are racist, either. However, if there is conflict between us, we will think that they are bad because they are born in North. That is the same in America too. Most of the American who are racist don’t say they racist vocally, but actually they are.

On the other hand, to a racist, race represents a person’s personality. When Mookie’s sister talks with Sal happily and Sal is so welcome to her, Mookie drags her out of the place and told her angrily not to talk to Sal any more. Even though Sal was not trying to advance to her, he was trying to show his love to his sister for Mookie. The reason why he gets mad is possibly that he thinks the reason that all the whites wants woman, especially black women, is just desired for the sex or just play them for a while. Certainly, it happens in China. Some factories reject to employ people from specific provinces in the post because they have encountered such bad cases. All of these three points are universal in the world I believe.

In conclusion, the movie tells us what to do. We can’t use violence action to reply racism. The only solution is that we should understand each other so that we can tolerate each other. We’d better control ourselves by logic but not emotion.

1. What purpose does money serve in the film?
2. Who is the hero of the film?
3. What is the moral of the story?

1. Money can be seen as the key of the whole movie. At the beginning, Sal gives money to Mayor generously. More important, Bugging’ out spends two dollars on his pizza but asked for so much sauce without permission. After Sal refuses it, he starts his plan about asking people to boycott Sal's. Because of this reason, Sal's pizzeria gets burnt and caused Radio Raheam's death. As the guy who threw the garbage bin to the window and caused people to destroy Sal's place, Mookie dares to go back to Sal and asks for his salary. In their conversation, money is the key word. Sal cramps out his money and throw it to Mookie in order to insult him. Sal tells Mookie he is a rich at that time with his salary, which is two times as it should be. That 250 bucks serves as a weapon to insult the black people. As well as a tool to express Sal's sorrow about his place that he has worked for years.

2. Obviously, the only hero in this movie is Mayor. Although, apparently, he is always
drunk and hangs out in the street without purpose. Sometimes, he is rude to others due to his drunkenness. However, in the movie, only he does the right thing most of the time. As one of the oldest man in the community, he says hello and respect everybody. He always calls others doctor even he/she is a child. For example, when he goes across the road, mother sister scolds him for his looking at her. He replies as gently as his clothes are. Another example is that although the black people insult him as a poor, homeless, and drunken old man, he speaks for himself sincerely and politely although he is a little bit angry. With what the black people say, he seems to a useless people, but he saved a child life bravely without thinking. Even if he can't get the understanding and gratefulness from the child's mother, he is still peaceful. At the end of the movie, as a black people, he stands for Sal's and asks people not to be violent because Radio Raheam's death is not Sal's fault. However, he can't change the situation, and he can only comfort mother sister as a man.

3.The moral of the movie is that we must do the right thing. The movie is full of unreasonable actions. On the one hand, these actions are always about violence, hatefulness, and vocal aggression. Malcolm, who is in the smilely's photo, advocates that violence is a means of defense. As the movie shown us, the black people arise after Radio Raheam dies. However, they destroy Sal’ place, which is not responsible for his death. On the other hand, the reasonable actions are about love and understanding. For example, Mayor doesn’t get mad at the black people and Mookie’s sister goes to Sal’s and has a good time with him. Although Mookie gets mad at her, she still speaks for Sal. In addition to this, his sister always tells him to take the responsibility for him family too. We should remember Mather Luther King Junior is also in smilely’s last photo. In conclusion, that is what Spike Lee what to tell us: We should make sure what is the right thing to do. We can’t use violence to fight for our right arbitrarily, although non-violence may not work either

Review of “Do The Right Thing”

Maybe many people have the same thought as me. After watched “Do The Right Thing”, the first word comes to me is “racism”. This movie mainly reviews that relationship between immigration and American. Unexpectedly, there is not so much about violence but vocal cursing.

Mookie, one of the main characters in the movie, works as a delivery in an Italian American’s Pizzeria. It is against the black people culture or is a shame to work for the white, especially in Brooklyn. In the movie, conflicts exist between Mookie and Sal’s family. In fact, I don’t think Mookie is a racist. Actually, he tried to maintain good in Sal’s business; for example, he is good at delivering pizza; in some parts, he tried to keep the troublemakers away but not ally with them. In the one hand, he often argues with Pino about racism, but he is just protecting his race. On the other hand, in the last view of the movie, he threw the garbage bin to break the window and still asked for his salary in the next day. Is it what a non-racist will do?

Actually, it is really hard to judge if the people who are in the movie racist or not. For example, when bugging’ out asks the four black people to boycott Sal, to my surprise, they laugh at him and say they like it very much. Obviously, they are in the same color, shouldn’t they are in the same side? Moreover, no one in the community agree with him. Do they just not want to give an adventure for that or are really peaceful people? I don’t think so. In the last view, all of the black people attacks the Sal’s place and yelled at the cops for Radio Raheam’s death. In fact, I don’t think they are against the Sal’s. Sal’s is just a tool that let the black people to express their anger that has been confined for a long time. We can conclude that from they don’t attack the Korean store. As we know, Radio Raheam doesn’t have many friends, but when he dies, every person provokes. In the community, the White’s and southern Americans restrain most of the black people. They don’t respect each other although they are in a relatively non-violence environment for a time.

In conclusion, this movie, as the same tells us that the director’s goal is to ask people to do the right thing. Unreasonable actions happen almost everywhere in the movie, and there are some key words about the reasonable actions: responsibility, peace, and love.

Statements

1. Although there are many arguments in the pizza owner’s family, they still love each other. It implies how the family runs when they are in conflict.
2. In the movie, the majority of blacks are not united together. Maybe that is why others do not respect them.
3. The movie reviews some interesting points, although both of the Korean and Italian come are immigration, the people in that society seem to like Italian more than the silent Asian.
4. Commonly, the black family can’t find their happiness because they are lack of money and respect.
5. Spike Lee wants to tell us that racism is still a big problem in American society. There are many conversations in the movie about racism.
6. Considerable black people are not responsible for their own lives for they don’t want to work and always kill time together.
7. There are some people still isolate themselves by different means such as Radio Raheam. He always walks with his turned on radio and ignores others’ complain.
8. In the movie, the specific community represents the poor, violence, and hopeless because of their miserable lives.
9. People always live in conflict. For example, although Sal’s son hates living in that place, he doesn’t have a choice because of the reality of life.
10. Every person has their own respectful people and protects them even if it may be improper in some time.

Why do they call "Da mayor" the "mayor"?
Who's neighborhood is this?
Is it racist for Sal (the pizzeria owner) to display only photographs of Italian-Americans on the wall of his restaurant?
Why does "da mayor" call everyone "Doctor"?
What purpose does "Radio Raheem" serve in the narrative?

In the movie, we can know "Da mayor" has lived in that community for 18 years. Also, in that period, negros usually live in the same place for their most of life, so he seems know everything about the community and gets his "Mayor" for his much experience and age. What's more, he dresses like a gentle man so he looks like a Mayor too.

All the people live in that community are black or Mexican which are poor and unrespectful by the majority in America. In a short, even he white people are not rich and well educated in that place. Therefore, it seems like chaos place.

I do not think it is a serious racism problem to do that. Because as a white, he certainly wants to put the people he respects on the wall but not the one, which is not related to him. However, if not all of the photographs in the wall are respectable to him; it is a kind of racism because he should also care about the Negro’s mind. He of course knows it is racist to put all whites on the wall in such a Negro community.

In my opinion, from Mayor’s deep mind, he thinks all the Negro is smart and respectful so he calls them “doctor”. Alternatively, maybe all the people live in the same community for their whole life, they seem to know most of things going on, and so they can be experiment too.

"Radio Raheem" is a place even a technique to relieve the pressure and bring some happiness in that movie. Furthermore, it serves as a technique to lead people into the next script in the movie and describe the outlook of movie such as the weather.

"Do The Right Thing"

At the begining, the women are boxing angrily and dancing strongly. From the lyrics and their actions, I conclude that they are expressing their dissatisfactory with the government and with the white. At that time, the negro were segregated so they were fighting for their rights as well as "the power" in the lyrics. Although it sounds violent, the titles implies the director will make it a right way which is peaceful way for the negro to protest. So,for the rest of the story, i think the director will go on describing what is the example of discrimination and how the negro fighting for their rights in the right way.

Even a real man will be afraid of ghosts

My greatest fear is about something scary. Since I was a little child, I was scared about if there were some ghosts around me. Maybe it caused by my watching some scary movies and hearing of some ghosts stories. Even after I grow up as a teenager, I am still afraid of them though they seem not so scared as before. Of course, as a young man, I am a little bit ashamed of being scared of that kind of unreal stuff. So, I often think about how to overcome this dread. I used to force myself to watch much scared movies so that I can be used to it, but it doesn’t work. Actually, besides this, I am also afraid of taking some hazardous games such as roller coaster, spaceship, and bungee jump. Although I became bolder to play such games, I can’t overcome it entirely. So, in the end, I decide just not to try those kinds of activities too much to stay out of the dread……

What do you think was Whitman's motivation for writing "Leaves of Grass"?
Is his lifestyle threatening to our cultural order?
What does this have to do with the essential questions of our class?

In my opinion, these questions are related. What Whitman wants to do decides what his lifestyle is in the society. If we find out what his motivation is, we can understand what this has to do with the essential questions of our class.

From what he writes, there is a natural feeling in it which is wild and strange. He describes a lot about the nature around us. He describes the sun setting, the weather, the grass on the ground. Beside this, he talks about his life and hope with his people in that kind of nature, which he enjoys. So I think his motivation for writing it is to recall us to find the relationship between human beings and nature. In that period, maybe there were a lot of obstacles for Whitman to enjoy his own life: he must work to go on living; he didn’t have much time spent with people he enjoys being with; he even didn’t have much time spend on the nature. So to enjoy his life, he tries to get out of the cave that the stop him from having a happy life. What is more, he mentions about sex, being naked and live for us; this must be threatening our society because it is out of order. In an extent, I even call him anarchist because his ideas base on human nature but not concern about the other result of it to other people. Everything he describes and advocates seems free and happy, but, people are always concern about themselves. Try to imagine, if everyone does what he says, everyone can have sex anytime anywhere to anyone without thinking about any consequences; Does it sound crazy? So, in conclusion, his motivation has a conflict with our responsibilities to the society. Although his ideas has some good aspects to do with the society now such as being more free from the restriction and approaching the nature, we still worry about other consequences it might happen.

Visionary Me

Visionary me, Nature.
The exciting day, the shining sun, the people I am interested in,
The happiness of the people I can not fell,
The warming sun I can not touch, but enjoying,
The calm lake I can not float on, but sitting next by,
The heart of the hot girl I can not own,

Everything in the nature seems escape from me,
like I am visionary to them.
The squirrels are running between the trees, collecting foods for the winter,
The leaves are falling down among the branches, waiting for their new lives,
The trees are still standing strongly, holding for their manliness,
The connections between them are still close,
But I, the visionary me, is separated from them,
It seems like I am the air in the top of the mountain,
It seems that I am the white colon button of the dryer,
It seems that I am the wheat bread in the laundry,
It seems, I should not be in this world,
Stay away in the galaxy,

I love the nature, I must run next to the lake without any decoration,
Now I am jumping out of the mountain, die among you guys,
I am rewriting myself to press button, touched by your dirty fingers
I am repainting myself to bread, feeling the peanut butter put by you guys.
I am no longer separated, I am in the nature now,
Although I will be dead, dirty or shit ,
I am still one of you guys, you can leave me , I am living in you.
Let’s jump of the mountain together,
Let’s become the dirty dryers together,
Let’s become the bread of peanut butter together,
Then you and me, are in the nature.

I think Whitman has the same idea with Thoreau and Emerson which is transcendentalism. In these pages, he tries to remind us to look through things with our “own eyes”. We can understand it better through the idea transcendentalism. Bother him and Thoreau went to live near the wood and tried to find the true meaning of life. They suggest that we should live for ourselves which means we can have our own perspectives toward the world. Moreover, Whitman is more active about that. He even advocates us to be naked approaching the nature to find ourselves. Obviously, I think it doesn’t work nowadays. Because of too many restrictions, more importantly, we will get discriminated by others in the society. At present, less and less people will comprehend what Whitman says; even they understand it, they wouldn’t do it either. So I guess when Whitman lived in this time, he would pay much attention to the utilitarianism in the society. People pay too much attention to their benefit so that they miss a lot even their morality.

How civil disobedience influence the action of Non-cooperation

Thoreau’s civil disobedience means reject to cooperate with governor if you think what he does is wrong. Beside this, it is a gentle action without violence or turbulence. Similarly, Gandhi’s non-cooperation means not to follow what the governor says if you are against them even if they use means to fight against you.
We can understand their ideas when we trace back to their era. During Thoreau’s period, American government was having a war with Mexico although lots of people were against this war within the country. Thoreau used his special action that he didn’t pay the toll tax to show his dissatisfaction to the government although he paid one day in jail as punishment. In colonial India, Ghandi even held a larger action of non-cooperation to protest the colony of British.
Thoreau, who is very close to another famous literature figure Emerson, was influenced by Emerson’s transcendentalism a lot. With the effect of transcendentalism, he made up his own ideas which are called individualism and activism. The ideas of spirit power of human beings courage him to do what he wants without concerning much about the consequences; at the same time, he did those kinds of things by himself for most the time. Ghandi absorbs Thoreau’s civil disobedience to use it as means to protest the British without violence action. Ghandi studied other culture and was impressed their advanced ideas. In that time, British were more advanced than India so that Indian would pay a lot to gain independence from British if they had war with them. To solve that problem peacefully and more efficient, Ghandi mixed Indian ideas and civil disobedience to form his non-cooperation.
“An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.” --from Ghandi
“The government itself, which is only the mode which the people have chosen to execute their will, is equally liable to be abused and perverted before the people can act through it. Witness the present Mexican war, (2) the work of comparatively a few individuals using the standing government as their tool; for, in the outset, the people would not have consented to this measure.” --– from Civil Disobedience
From the quotes, “an eye for an eye” is similar with “abused”. Both of the phase emphasize that we should not set the law of governing only for punishment with violent action, or it would make the society disordered and disharmonious.
“All men recognize the right of revolution; that is, the right to refuse allegiance to, and to resist, the government, when its tyranny or its inefficiency is great and unendurable. . .
"When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall — think of it, always."
“Fall, tyrants” and “tyranny, unendurable” implied that both of them were not satisfied with their government at that time. In their opinions, these kinds of government must be overthrown early or late. They deeply think it is the tendency of history, so they used their action to realize it.

Injustice Law in China

Although China government always says Chinese are in communist society, however, there are a lot of injustices existing in not only the society but the law.
In China, laws are applied differently to member of Communist Party and common people. For example, if a minister gets bribery then it is discovered, though he will get caught and judged, he won’t be punished too heavily even though the bribery is a great amount. Opposite to this, recently, there was a guy found the ATM didn’t work in the right way and got two hundred thousand Yuan illegally. After a year, he reported it voluntary but was sentenced life imprisonment. From this case, we can see how the laws unfairly.
If we could change it, obviously, it seems easy, I can just apply the law the all kinds of people equally. Furthermore, for reminding people not to commit a crime, we can even more make it stricter to the members of Communist Party.

Life without decorations

The marrow of life is to stay with nature, which means live simplely.Being simple is hard, so many people, including the writer, suffer a lot during their life. If we live in a busy life, we are not living for ourselves, we are living for going on living. Everyone should have his dream, which may be set when he is child. The marrow of life can be found during his way to chase his dream. In short, the marrow of life is to find a goal and to accomplish it although you can't finally, and not to care about too much things about living, live for ourselves, live base on the nature.
I would like use bee to describe what our life is. We are like bees, they busy collecting the honey most of the time for their life, but in the end, the honey is taken by human beings, leave nothing for the bees.Their life seems worthless with no goal except collecting honey. We are the same, we have such good place to live, howevey, we are chasing endless new things everyday,we forget why we live in this world, this life is worthless too.

1.In the last part of the paragraph, writer tells us he thinks of the day with the wind blowing freely and forever. The blowing wind makes writer feels like staying in the heaven which is quiet and holy. Staying in the blowing wind is like being in the heaven without not much extra things. The paragraph is talking about how his life will be in his new house too. So if air can blow through his house, he can feel like being in the quiet nature himself again.

2.
1)To live so sturdily and Spartan- like so that he can suck out the marrow of the life. Hard life can let him find the origin meaning of life directly .
2)Living in such a simple life enable him to find out what is ensential to him and what he can live without. It teaches him how to choose to live.

3.
1)"though the fable tells us that we were long ago changed into men; like pygmies we fight with cranes; it is error upon error, and clout upon clout and our best virtue has for its occasion a superfluous and evitable wretchedness. Our life is frittered away by detail."
2)Because he mainly talked about life in this article .What he thinks living should be is to be simple. For example, blowing wind and living in the wood seems very simple and boring, but only this can make he understand where he lives and what he lives for. Simple life could mean we live for ourselves not others, we could live simplly withour caring so much about other things; we should not be controlled by the life.

What is the purpose for us to do such much things?Does it work for us or are we working for it?
